Establish the R-706 Reference

Chemours describes Ti-Pure R-706 as a rutile titanium dioxide pigment made with its proprietary chloride process for interior and exterior coatings. Its product page lists gloss and semi-gloss architectural paints, wood coatings, vehicle refinish and OEM topcoats, and coil coatings among the applications.

The February 2020 Ti-Pure R-706 Product Information sheet identifies titanium dioxide content as 93 wt% minimum. It labels the remaining values in its properties table as typical unless otherwise specified. Keep that label with every value you use: a stated minimum and a typical reference value do different jobs in a qualification plan.

Build an R-706-Specific Evaluation Brief

Start with the information you already have. Use these points to organize the brief, then add missing details as your evaluation progresses.

  1. Current reference: the R-706 document name, version and values used in your specification or control.
  2. Coating system: waterborne, solvent-borne or another route; resin or binder; pigment loading; key additives; and relevant dispersion, application or curing conditions.
  3. End use: substrate, interior or exterior exposure, finish and the performance requirements that matter in the finished coating.
  4. Acceptance plan: control formulation, test methods, numeric limits or comparison rules, required documents and the people who will approve the result.

This brief gives a selected Grade a defined test context. It does not identify a product for you or predict the result.

Plan Tests Around the R-706 Evaluation Dimensions

Choose the dimensions that matter in your own formulation rather than treating every item as a required test.

Appearance and optical response

Consider color or undertone, gloss, tint strength and hiding. Define the instrument, film preparation, substrate, film thickness and R-706 control used for each comparison.

Formulation and process response

Consider wet-in, dispersion, viscosity or rheology, and stability through the process conditions that matter to you. Keep pigment loading, binder, additives, dispersion energy and application conditions controlled.

Durability and mechanical requirements

Select exposure and mechanical tests from the coating's actual end use. Record the substrate, preparation, cure, exposure cycle, measurement method and acceptance threshold.

Handling, where relevant

If powder handling affects your operation, define the receiving, storage, transfer or bulk-flow observations your team will record.

Together, these points help identify areas to examine; they do not supply acceptance limits for another product.

Understand the Scope of the TS-6706 Announcement

Chemours' 19 February 2025 announcement describes Ti-Pure TS-6706 as its TMP- and TME-free version of R-706. The announcement reports that Chemours evaluated TS-6706 in water-based and solvent-based architectural and industrial paint systems, with attention to viscosity stability, color, gloss, tint strength, hiding and mechanical strength. It separately reports dry-pigment bulk-flow testing for TS-6706 at laboratory and silo scale.

The stated TS-6706/R-706 relationship is limited to these two Chemours grades, and the reported evaluation applies to TS-6706 in Chemours' program. When assessing a separately selected supply, use your R-706 control formulation, relevant test conditions and acceptance criteria to create a separate qualification plan.
